This year and in the years to come Oakwood Community Church is using a Sunday School curriculum called Children Desiring God. The authors write, “Where do we want our children to be 10 or 20 years from now? Can churches grow mighty oaks of righteousness without intentionally nurturing the saplings under their care? The deep-rooted faith we desire for our children--a faith that weathers the storms of life and bears fruit for the glory of God--is nurtured by a systematic plan to partner with parents in communicating the greatness of God, the glory of Christ, and the power of the Gospel.”
Below you will find a brief description of the material that each class is studying during the 2007/2008 Sunday school year.
Nursery and Toddler: A Sure Foundation The church nursery should be an exciting and vital ministry in the church. It should be be a launching pad for nurturing the faith of the next generation. A Sure Foundation: A Philosophy and Curriculum for Ministry to Infants and Toddlers is designed to help you transform your ministry to infants and toddlers into an integral beginning—a place of prayer for young children, a place where they hear foundational Bible stories, and a place where children learn simple truth statements and begin to memorize scripture as they form their language skills.
Pre K & K: He Established a Testimony God has testified of His glorious deeds and mighty power. This curriculum explores God's greatness by noting key themes found chronologically throughout the Old Testament. Bible stories are not written out; teachers prepare the lesson through the study of scripture using a list of key themes, opening illustrations, and application questions to acquaint children with a great God whose character never changes.
1st and 2nd Grade: The ABC’s of God Right thinking about God is essential for the life of faith. Using the alphabet as a framework for teaching the attributes of God, this study explores the delight that God has in Himself as the source, means, and purpose of all things. Each lesson asks and answers three key questions, "Who is God?" "What is He like?" and "How should I act toward Him?" as it presents a theology of God for children.
3rd and 4th Grade: In the Beginning...Jesus The Bible is one complete true story that progressively reveals God's redemptive plan, which comes to complete fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. In the Beginning...Jesus begins with a historical mystery—Jesus' death on the cross—and asks the questions: "What really happened here?" "Why did Jesus die?" and "Who did it?" To find the answers to these questions, the study goes to the beginning of the Bible narrative in Genesis and then moves chronologically through the Old Testament text as students search for clues that foreshadow the coming of Jesus and His redemptive work on the cross. Special emphasis is given to showing that the Bible is God's story from beginning to end and that Jesus is the key to understanding the story.
5th and 6th Grade: How Majestic is Your Name The names of God are wonderful revelations of His majestic character. This study presents the Hebrew names of God in the Old Testament and the names of Christ and the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Each lesson encourages children to see and rejoice in the goodness and greatness of God as they explore the meaning of His glorious names.
